roquiah of gaza camp / by Maranie Staab

in 2011, roquiah, age 10, of homs, syria traveled to jordan to escape the escalating conflict.

i had the privilege of meeting her today when visiting a school in the city of mafraq.

when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up she responded without hesitation that she would be a teacher.

"why do you want to be a teacher?"

"a teacher can change a society and have an effect on people’s lives. what you do in this world comes back to you."

when asked of her dreams she responded that, “I dream that all countries become free so that all people can return home and help to teach the children”

my time here has been incredible in so many ways -- not least of which is because of the stories that I have had the privilege of being told. they are gifts.
